Dr. Paul Turke received a PhD in anthropology from Northwestern University in 1985 and an MD from Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine, in 1996, and he completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Michigan in 1999. His work in anthropology focused on childcare in Ifaluk and Yap, which are in the Western Caroline Archipelago of Micronesia. This work demonstrated that grandmothers, grandfathers, and older siblings are important contributors to childcare and stimulated an interest in what is now called ‘evolutionary medicine,’ which eventually led to a career in pediatrics. Dr. Turke is still active in evolutionary medicine and has written a book called ‘Bringing Up Baby: An Evolutionary View of Pediatrics, ‘due to be published in the summer of 2024. In his spare time, he cooks, runs, swims, climbs ropes, and watches his grandchildren.
